Case study project comprises of the Design and Build refurbishment/conversion of a dilapidated fruit packing factory into a modern animal care facility at Writtle College in Essex. This project involved careful negotiation with the Chelmsford Planners and Building Control to create a modern facility to a fast track construction programme.
The refurbishment brief involved careful removal and disposal of existing asbestos roof sheets in conjunction with the phased re-roofing of the complete structure with a modern Kingspan standing seam roof, which provided much improved insulation to the building. The structure also underwent a complete window replacement using comar aluminium windows and also received a section of curtain walling to the main entrance area to introduce natural light to the new foyer area. It was necessary to construct a large mezzanine floor to the majority of the building footprint to provide essential teaching and admin facilities whilst the ground floor and external areas were designed to house a multitude of animals and reptiles which each required careful consideration as to the environments that they require.
