Case study project comprises of a large purpose built two-storey sixth form teaching block completed at the William De Ferrers School in Essex. This new-build project required a carefully planned enabling works phase involving the progressive re-direction and removal of existing car-park areas, the construction of a temporary car-park to ease congestion and to provide essential temporary parking facilities for teaching staff. The construction of a large temporary haul road ensured un-impeded access to the restricted site to ensure minimum disruption and maximum safety to the school, extensive services diversion works and the separate construction of a purpose built athletics track were also completed during the fastrack enabling works phase.
The new build sixth form block incorporates a large Rigidal standing seam roof and Metsec structural walling with a brickwork façade in conjunction with Shuco curtain walling. The project also required a very measured and professional approach to construction of the two link bridges that connected the new build to existing areas of the school. This phase of works required construction of large temporary roof structures over existing classroom areas to allow the new link corridors to be constructed over live areas of the school. In addition to the on-site construction works, our involvement in regular BREEAM meetings and careful management of BREEAM policies helped to ensure that the ‘Very Good’ rating set by the Planning Officer was achieved within budget.
