Tilbury Grain Store

New Grain Store Building & Associated Works

Company: Cadman Construction Ltd  |  Category: Industrial and Retail

We were tasked with a major storage expansion project at the Port of Tilbury, aiming to provide an additional 16,000 tonnes of flat grain storage. This expansion brought the port's total grain storage capacity to an impressive 136,000 tonnes. The new flat store, measuring 66m by 36m, features a state-of-the-art mill gallery conveyor system, capable of feeding grain at an incredible rate of 500 tonnes per hour.

Construction and Design

The foundation and slabs of the flat store are supported by 500 driven piles, with the main structure constructed from a robust steel frame and specialist precast grain walling. The building is enveloped by cement-based corrugated roof and wall cladding, with an expansion joint at the midpoint to accommodate the building's length. Two sophisticated conveying systems, both internal and external, were installed to seamlessly link the flat store to the docks, ensuring efficient grain import from berthed ships. Additionally, we constructed heavy-duty concrete slabs and a weighbridge to facilitate smooth operations.

Project Execution

Throughout the project, we maintained minimal disruption to port traffic, the port railway line, and adjacent offices, demonstrating our commitment to operational efficiency and client satisfaction. Delivered on time and within budget, the project reflects our ability to manage complex requirements and tight deadlines. We collaborated closely with the client and design team, fostering a strong working relationship that was pivotal to the project's success. Our careful sequencing of the program also mitigated the impact of winter weather, ensuring a smooth and timely completion.

This case study exemplifies our expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects, our dedication to client satisfaction, and our ability to deliver innovative solutions under challenging conditions.
